Methane is an organic compound with a molecular formula of CH4 and a molecular weight of 16.043. Methane is the simplest organic matter and the hydrocarbon with the smallest carbon content (the largest hydrogen content). Methane is widely distributed in nature and is the main component of natural gas, biogas, pit gas, etc., commonly known as gas. Methane is a colorless and odorless gas under standard conditions. Under normal circumstances, methane is relatively stable and extremely difficult to dissolve in water. It does not react with strong oxidants such as potassium permanganate, nor does it react with strong acids or alkalis. But under certain conditions, methane also undergoes certain reactions. Methane is a very important fuel. It is the main component of natural gas, accounting for about 87%. It is also used as a standard fuel for water heaters and gas stoves for calorific value testing. Methane can be used as the standard gas and calibration gas for the production of combustible gas alarms. It can also be used as a carbon source for solar cells, amorphous silicon film vapor chemical deposition, and as a raw material for pharmaceutical and chemical synthesis. Methane is also used in large quantities to synthesize ammonia, urea and carbon black. It can also be used to produce methanol, hydrogen, acetylene, ethylene, formaldehyde, carbon disulfide, nitromethane, hydrocyanic acid and 1,4-butanediol. Chlorination of methane can produce mono-, di-, trichloromethane and carbon tetrachloride. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The storage temperature should not exceed 30°C. It should be stored separately from oxidants, etc., and should not be mixed. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities. It is forbidden to use mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to sparks. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment. Methane may be harmful to the environment, and special attention should be paid to fish and water bodies. Special attention should also be paid to the pollution of surface water, soil, atmosphere and drinking water.

Methane is used as a fuel for ovens, homes, water heaters, kilns, automobiles, turbines, and other things. It combusts with oxygen to create fire.

②In the Chemical Industry

Methane is converted tosynthesis gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, by steam reforming.
