Acetylene, molecular formula C2H2, commonly known as wind coal or calcium carbide gas, is the smallest member of alkyne compounds. It is slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, benzene, and acetone. Pure acetylene is odorless, but industrial acetylene has the smell of garlic because it contains impurities such as hydrogen sulfide and phosphine. Pure acetylene is a colorless and aromatic flammable gas. It may explode violently in liquid and solid state or in gaseous state and certain pressure. Factors such as heat, vibration, and electric spark can cause an explosion, so it cannot be liquefied under pressure. Storage or transportation. At 15°C and 1.5MPa, the solubility in acetone is extremely high, with a solubility of 237g/L, so industrial acetylene is acetylene dissolved in acetone, also called dissolved acetylene. Acetylene gas can produce high temperature when burned. The temperature of oxyacetylene flame can reach about 3200℃. It is often used for metal cutting such as shipbuilding and steel structure; it is used for organic synthesis (making acetaldehyde, acetic acid, benzene, synthetic rubber, synthetic fibers, etc.), Synthetic medicine and chemical intermediates vinyl acetylene or divinyl acetylene; used to produce standard gases such as transformer oil analysis standard gas. High-purity acetylene gas is used for atomic absorption and other instruments. The packaging method of acetylene is usually dissolved in solvents and porous materials and filled into steel cylinders. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The storage temperature should not exceed 30°C. It should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, and halogens, and avoid mixed storage. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities. Application:

①Cutting and welding metal:

When acetylene burns, it can produce high temperature. The temperature of oxyacetylene flame can reach about 3200℃, which is used for cutting and welding metals.

②Basic chemical raw materials:

Acetylene is the basic raw material for the manufacture of acetaldehyde, acetic acid, benzene, synthetic rubber, and synthetic fibers.

③ Experiment

High purity acetylene can be used in some experiments.
