Technical Parameters

Isopentane, also known as 2-methylbutane, has a chemical formula of C5H12. It is a colorless, transparent and volatile liquid with a pleasant aromatic odor. Isopentane is extremely flammable, and its vapor and air can form an explosive mixture; it is very easy to burn and explode when exposed to open flames, high heat, and oxidants, and burns to produce irritating smoke; it can react strongly with oxidants and even cause combustion. Its vapor is heavier than air and can spread to a considerable distance in a lower place, and it will cause backflame in case of an open flame. In case of high heat, the internal pressure of the container will increase and there is a danger of cracking and explosion. The combustion (decomposition) products are carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Pentane can be obtained from the catalytic cracking and thermal decomposition of natural gas or petroleum. Mainly used in organic synthesis, it can be used as a solvent for the catalyst in the production of polyethylene, a blowing agent for expandable polystyrene, a blowing agent for polyurethane foam systems, a deasphalting solvent, etc.; when used as a solvent, it can be used with pentane, Alkane, heptane, etc. have the same effect, and the solubility is slightly worse than that of pentane. This product has a high octane number and can be used as fuel for automobiles and airplanes. Storage and transportation characteristics: The warehouse is ventilated, low temperature and dry; stored separately from oxidants and acids. Fire fighting method: spray water to cool the container, and if possible, move the container from the fire scene to an open place. If the container in the fire scene has changed color or produces sound from the safety relief device, it must be evacuated immediately. Extinguishing agent: foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide, sandy soil. Extinguishing with water is ineffective.

Application:

① drive turbines:

Isopentane is used in a closed loop in geothermal power production to drive turbines.

②freezing:

Isopentane is used, in conjunction with dry ice or liquid nitrogen, to freeze tissues for cryosectioning in histology.

③Foaming agent:

Can be mixed with cyclopentane as a foaming agent for rigid urethane foam.
