Ethane is an alkane with a chemical formula of C2H6, with a melting point (°C) of -183.3 and a boiling point (°C) of -88.6. Under standard conditions, ethane is a combustible gas, colorless and odorless, insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and acetone, soluble in benzene, and miscible with carbon tetrachloride. The mixture of ethane and air can form an explosive mixture, and it may burn and explode when exposed to heat sources and open flames. The products of combustion (decomposition) are carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Violent chemical reactions can occur in contact with fluorine, chlorine, etc. Ethane exists in petroleum gas, natural gas, coke oven gas and petroleum cracked gas, and is obtained by separation. In the chemical industry, ethane is mainly used to produce ethylene, vinyl chloride, ethyl chloride, acetaldehyde, ethanol, ethylene glycol oxide, etc. through steam cracking. Ethane can be used as a refrigerant in refrigeration facilities. It can also be used as a standard gas and calibration gas for heat treatment in the metallurgical industry. It should be stored separately from oxidants and halogens, and avoid mixed storage. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities.
