Methane is an organic compound with a molecular formula of CH4 and a molecular weight of 16.043. Methane is the simplest organic matter and the hydrocarbon with the smallest carbon content (the largest hydrogen content). Methane is widely distributed in nature and is the main component of natural gas, biogas, pit gas, etc., commonly known as gas. Methane is a colorless and odorless gas under standard conditions. Under normal circumstances, methane is relatively stable and extremely difficult to dissolve in water. It does not react with strong oxidants such as potassium permanganate, nor does it react with strong acids or alkalis. But under certain conditions, methane also undergoes certain reactions. Methane is a very important fuel. It is the main component of natural gas, accounting for about 87%. It is also used as a standard fuel for water heaters and gas stoves for calorific value testing. Methane can be used as the standard gas and calibration gas for the production of combustible gas alarms. Methane is also used in large quantities to synthesize ammonia, urea and carbon black. Chlorination of methane can produce mono-, di-, trichloromethane and carbon tetrachloride. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The storage temperature should not exceed 30°C. It should be stored separately from oxidants, etc., and should not be mixed. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities.
