Explosion in Nitrogen Trifluoride NF3 Gas Plant

Around 4:30 a.m. on August 7, the Kanto Denka Shibukawa plant reported an explosion to the fire department. According to police and firefighters, the explosion caused a fire in part of the plant. The fire was extinguished about four hours later.

The company stated that the fire occurred in a building used to produce nitrogen trifluoride gas, which is used in semiconductor manufacturing. Police and fire departments are currently investigating the details and cause of the fire. Furthermore, the fire is expected to have a significant impact on the company’s performance.

A representative from Kanto Denka said: “We deeply apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to the surrounding residents. We will investigate the cause and work hard to ensure safe and stable production.”

High-purity nitrogen trifluoride is mainly used in cleaning processes in the manufacturing fields of large-scale integrated circuits and display panels, and is the most widely used electronic special gas. The global supply of nitrogen trifluoride may face a supply gap of thousands of tons, which is expected to bring market opportunities to Chinese nitrogen trifluoride suppliers.
