The trade association Hydrogen UK called on the government to quickly shift from hydrogen strategy to delivery.
The UK’s hydrogen strategy launched in August marked a critical step in using hydrogen as a carrier to achieve net zero emissions, but it also marked the beginning of the next phase of activities.
This is from the newly established Hydrogen UK, which was renamed by the Hydrogen Taskforce, which was established in March 2020 by the leading hydrogen energy organization in the UK, as the association is ready to support the industry in its next phase of activities.

Countries in the world are on the verge of large-scale commercialization of hydrogen, the new technologies required for the production and use of hydrogen and the economic and environmental benefits expected to follow.
The UK hydrogen strategy sets a goal of achieving 5GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, but the UK hydrogen energy scenario places it at the lower limit of deliverables.
In order to achieve the net zero commitment, the association’s “central” scenario plan envisages reaching 14 GW by 2030 — roughly evenly distributed between blue and green hydrogen — and increasing to nearly 60 GW by 2050.
In addition, the association stated that if the hydrogen production scale is expanded faster in the 2020s and the 5GW production target is raised, the cost of achieving the UK’s net zero target and the “budget” for carbon emissions will also be significantly reduced.
Hydrogen UK stated that in order to achieve its recommended goals, it should rapidly expand its production scale by providing hydrogen business models to producers by mid-2022. The government has proposed and negotiated a “differential contract” model similar to that used to expand offshore wind power, but it now needs to be implemented quickly.
Another suggestion is that a detailed and unique policy and regulatory framework should be developed to stimulate demand for hydrogen to create markets in the end-use sectors (ie, heating, transportation, industry, and power generation).
This needs to be accompanied by the development of distribution and storage infrastructure, which will require mechanisms to release the necessary capital investment.
Hydrogen UK pointed out that the UK also needs skilled labor to realize its hydrogen energy ambitions, and it is estimated that it can support up to 75,000 jobs by 2035. Need to develop training and support urgently, remember that it will take at least two years from the beginning of learning and practical experience, so that workers have sufficient skills to add value to the market.
Last but not least, no one should be left behind, and the widest range of stakeholders should be involved.

Hydrogen UK is currently carrying out an event called “Building a Hydrogen Society” to promote a better understanding of the benefits that low-carbon hydrogen provides to the UK.
